President Barack Obama honored the top achievers from the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition at the White House on July 20. In the competition, held in Orlando on May 8, Texas placed first in the team competition and Missouri placed second (view the webcast). Obama praised the “mathletes” for their outstanding achievement and their commitment to academics, and he also recognized the volunteer coaches. The MATHCOUNTS winners presented Obama with an official MATHCOUNTS Handbook signed by both teams. NSPE is a founding sponsor of MATHCOUNTS.
