Carson Riland

Topic: How to Survive a Nuclear Detonation

Carson Riland is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Health Physics Diagnostic Sciences Department at UNLV. In his previous position, he served a variety of roles with the Department of Energy's Radiological Emergency Response Teams, including both Crisis and Consequence Response. He has participated in numerous domestic and international radiological emergency response exercises and real-world events. He has served on many emergency response working groups and scientific committees, also domestic and internationally. Carson holds an AS in Electronics Technology, a BS and MS in Health Physics, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. In addition, he is a Certified Health Physicist and a Certified Safety Professional.

One of the country’s most significant terrorism concerns is use of an Improvised Nuclear Device (IND). A basic overview of radiation safety principles will be presented, followed by a discussion of effects from a nuclear detonation. In addition to highlighting potential impacts, strategies for personal and community response will be presented.
