Engineering Exemptions and Education: Diminish the First and Enhance the Second

When:  May 20, 2020 from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM (ET)
This begins by celebrating engineering excellence and engineer exemplars. Then it describes two liabilities of U.S. engineering, the first of which is how licensure exemptions markedly reduce the engineering community’s ability to protect the public. The second weakness is that the bachelor’s degree as the required formal education for engineering licensure, which has been in effect for eight decades, falls far short of what is needed to prepare tomorrow’s engineers in responsible charge. The presentation offers suggestions for ways to address engineering’s weaknesses by building on its strengths.
