Bio

Born and raised in Virginia. B.S. in Chemical Engineering with Honors, University of Virginia, 1983 Ph.D. in Government and Foreign Affairs, University of Virginia, 1994 Following a first career in engineering in the 1980s (Philip Morris and Eastman Kodak), returned to school to study political economy and Asian studies, and since then have been in academia at University of Washington (UW). Became part of the founding faculty for the new STEM School at UW Bothell campus. Licensed as a PE in 2012 in State of Washington. Now helping lead development of new mechanical engineering degree, scheduled to launch fall 2014. I teach courses in general chemistry, power generation, introduction to engineering, energy policy and economics, and professional practice. I am interested in deepening integration of liberal arts in engineering education, increasing awareness not only of ethics but also of cultural, economic, and political contexts in which innovation occurs and engineering practiced.
